Teresa Navarrete Scholarship - Creating a better future in Education

Teresa Navarrete

TRENZA is a thirteen year-old student organization on the UC Berkeley campus dedicated to serving the Chicana/Latina community at UC Berkeley. TRENZA strives to provide women with academic, community and social support in order to insure their success at UC Berkeley. TRENZA now has over a hundred alumni members that have continued their success attending graduate programs or pursing professional careers in business, education, medicine and engineering. As we, the alumni of TRENZA, strive to support our undergraduate members and impact our Latino community through education, we are proud to present the education scholarship honoring the loving memory of Teresa Navarrete.

In 2000, Teresa graduated from UC Berkeley with degrees in Social Welfare and Sociology. As an undergraduate, Teresa made great contributions to TRENZA and to the CAL community. With her energy and great charisma, Teresa held leadership positions in business, social and academic student organizations. Upon graduation, Teresa joined the United Way Foundation to encourage and help prepare elementary and middle school students to attend college. Teresa aspired to become a school principal in the community that she grew up in Whittier, CA. Unfortunately, due to a tragic accident, Teresa was taken from our community in 2001.

Teresa Navarrete's goal in life was to provide a better education for all students, but specifically focused on impacting the lives of minority students. Her family, friends and our Latino community remember Teresa with great love and it is with great honor that TRENZA wishes to carry Teresa's torch and passion for education. The alumni of TRENZA will award a $500 scholarship to an exemplary UC Berkeley student that works with the Latino community and strives to improve education for minority students.
