Scholarships

TRENZA recognizes the need to support other Chicana/Latinas in their academic endeavors. We also believe that we have a responsibility to encourage other young Chicana/Latinas to pursue higher education. We demonstrate this encouragement by offering two $500 scholarships to graduating Chicana/Latina high school seniors, offered by undergraduate students, and a third scholarship honoring the loving memory of Teresa Navarrete, offered by alumnae.

 

We are pleased to announce Perla Z. Soria as the 2008 Teresa Navarrete Scholarship recipient.

Perla is one of our very own Trenza Alumni!!! She is currently pursuing a Masters in Education at USC to become a Student Counselor. Perla graduated from Cal in 2007 with a B.A. in Chicano Studies and Sociology. She is expected to complete her M.Ed in 2009. Her ultimate dream is to complete her Doctorate in Education or Sociology and eventually become the director to her own educational equity program.

In a recent email to the scholarship committee Perla wrote, "I would like to express my greatest gratitude in awarding me this scholarship. It is a great honor to be awarded the Teresa Navarrete Scholarship. I truly appreciate the financial contribution and investment Trenza Alumni has decided to make in my education. Once again Gracias! May many more blessings come your way."

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2008 scholarship. To everyone who payed dues, thank you. To everyone who sold flowers during graduation, thank you. To everyone who sold yummy watermelon waters when they could have been watching the Homecoming game, thank you!! Also, many thanks to those who participated in the scholarship reading process. It always takes a little extra effort to get a group of busy mujeres on a conference call. A very special THANK YOU goes to Lorena Jimenez, Teresa's sister, for selecting the final recipient.

I'd also like to recognize that during this country's financial situation it becomes increasingly difficult to contribute. For everyone who donated to the scholarship fund, Thank you. If you would like to help, you can do so by volunteering your time or by paying your dues. Dues directly support the scholarship fund.
